What is Award ?

  1. An Award is a prize or a mark of recognition given to an individual or a group of individuals for the outstanding performance, achievement or contribution in a particular field or area.
  2. Awards can be given in various forms, such as certificates, trophies, medals, cash prizes, or other forms of recognition.
  3. They are often given in fields like sports, music, film, literature, science, and business to celebrate exceptional achievements, motivate individuals to continue to excel, and to inspire others to strive for excellence.
  4. Awards can be given by organizations, institutions, governments, or even by individuals as a way of showing appreciation and recognition for outstanding work or achievements.

There are two major award that is asked in exam is

1)Civilian Award

Civilian awards in India are honour given by the Government of India to recognize the contributions of civilians in various fields such as art, literature, science, social service, sports, and public affairs. These awards are given on the occasion of Republic Day (January 26) and Independence Day (August 15) every year.

There are several types of civilian awards in India, including:

  1. Bharat Ratna: The highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for exceptional service or performance of the highest order.

  2. Padma Vibhushan: The second-highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by Government servants.

  3. Padma Bhushan: The third-highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for distinguished service of high order in any field.

  4. Padma Shri: The fourth-highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for distinguished service in any field.

Other civilian awards in India include the Gandhi Peace Prize, Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, and the Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony. These awards are given to recognize exceptional contributions and achievements by Indian citizens in various fields.

Bharat Ratna

  • The highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for exceptional service or performance of the highest order.
  • The Bharat Ratna award is the highest civilian award in India and is designed in the shape of a Peepal leaf, which is India's national tree. The award is made of bronze and is about 2.5 inches in diameter. The emblem of India is engraved on the obverse side of the medal, and the words "Bharat Ratna" are inscribed in Devanagari script on the reverse side.
  • The medal is suspended from a white ribbon, which is triangular in shape and bears India's saffron, white, and green national colors. The ribbon is worn around the neck by the awardee, and the medal is worn on the left chest.
  • The design of the Bharat Ratna award has gone through some changes over the years. In 1954, when the award was first instituted, it consisted of a circular gold medal with the words "Bharat Ratna" inscribed in Devanagari script.
  • later, in 1980 it was changed into current design.


Padma Award

Padma Awards are civilian awards of India that are conferred annually by the President of India. The Padma Awards are given in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, and are among the highest civilian awards in India.

i)Padma Vibhushan

  • The second-highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by Government servants.
  • The Padma Vibhushan medal is made of gold and is circular in shape. The medal has a diameter of 3.2 cm and is embossed with the image of the lotus flower, which is India's national flower. The words "Padma Vibhushan" are inscribed in Devanagari script on the front side of the medal.

ii) Padma Bhushan

  • The third-highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for distinguished service of high order in any field.
  • The Padma Bhushan medal is also made of gold and is circular in shape. The medal has a diameter of 3.2 cm and is embossed with the image of the lotus flower. The words "Padma Bhushan" are inscribed in Devanagari script on the front side of the medal.


iii)Padma Shri
  • The fourth-highest civilian award in India, which is awarded for distinguished service in any field.
  • The Padma Shri medal is made of bronze and is circular in shape. The medal has a diameter of 3.2 cm and is embossed with the image of the lotus flower. The words "Padma Shri" are inscribed in Devanagari script on the front side of the medal.
